Marta Duarte d’Almeida is a musicista, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter. She play-sings and play-tells!
Music has been her companion ever since the time when all of life was contained in a single day. She was three years old when she stepped up the stage, sang and enchanted for the very first time, in the company of her older brother and sister. It was also within this musical and familial environment that she discovered her first means of self-expression – playing the guitar. Even though the piano has been her first instrument, it so happened that it was way too big to be brought into school.
At twelve she truly discovered the magic of singing and wholeheartedly ventured into it. Her first band– a garage band – was formed with her siblings and called Ujmanus. It all started as playtime in family parties, among friends and in the mass choir.
Marta, has come a long way from those days and finished her studies in JBJAZZ and Hot Clube de Portugal. At the first one, she took the general course, having guitar as her main instrument; at the second one, she had voice classes with teacher Vânia Fernandes. At Lusíada University of Lisbon, Marta completed the licentiate degree in Jazz and Modern Music, where she specialized in guitar playing with teacher Nuno Costa and Mário Delgado. In the words of her teacher Nuno Costa, “Marta, put your skirt on! You’re the first female jazz guitar player of Portugal!”
Next to her solo-career, Duarte d'Almeida leads a variety of project. She plays the role of musicista-contadora (musician and storyteller) in the project Tal Mãe, tal Filha (Like Mother, Like Daughter), a collaboration with her mother and professional storyteller Joaninha Duarte.
Duarte d’Almeida also develops works as a musical performer, in theater company Alpha Teatro, in ASSESTA (Alentejo’s Writers Association), in the project eFabularia from Almada Mundo Association, in publicity, in the company UOU – Uma Ocasião Única and in musical theater.
As a player-author, she leads the band MaZéi, a musical project where folk meets swing through the soul of Portuguese songs, the mysterious body of jazz and the energetic spirit of folk. Alcanchais, a record released in 2017, is the testimony of the coexistence of those worlds. Musicista is the title that she chose to best define her, (an uncommon word in Portugal, that, beingused in Brazilian-Portuguese, wasgifted to her by her Brazilian friend Ju).
“Her singularity as a guitar player can be seen in her intuition and in her technique, and her singing purpose is revealed in every note that echoes from her guitar”. It’s within this poetic and musical tones, and in the midst of the world of stories, that my soul finds itself more found.
(PT) Marta Duarte d’Almeida é musicista, multi-instrumentista, tocantautor.
